Former Democratic State Chairman John Burns backs Cheevers for Governor
Former Democratic State Chairman, John J. Burns formally endorsed the candidacy of Jack Cheevers for the Democratic New York State Gubernatorial Nomination.
In a statement released today, Mr. Burns said, "I am helping Jack because I think he has an important message to give, a message that needs telling, a message that is vital to the people of New York State and indeed, to the workings of State Government itself. I have only the highest regard for Andrew Cuomo and Carl McCall, but in terms of priorities, Jack's message is paramount."
"That message is that we can make New York State a better place to live, that we can restore the prosperity this great state once enjoyed, that we can work toward full employment without giving away the store, that we can improve the economic climate, that we can come up with new and innovative approaches to solving our common problems and that we can make New York State Government more responsive and effective. Jack Cheevers is a fresh new voice in a tired chorus of sameness."

A former Mayor of the City of Binghamton from 1958 to 1966, Mr. Burns, with the support of then Senator Robert F. Kennedy, served as State Democratic Chairman during the Republican Rockefeller Administration from 1966 to 1972. He was later named Appointments Secretary, a cabinet level post in the second Hugh Carey Administration from June 1979 through 1982.
Mr. Burns now resides with his wife Theresa at their home in Binghamton.
