Jack
Cheevers, an announced candidate for the Democratic Nomination for Governor of
New York has challenged Albany leadership both in the governor’s mansion
and on the legislative floor.
According to Cheevers,
“The Albany political machine has delivered only high taxes, late budgets
and endless bureaucracy driving businesses and people out of the state. As industry and employment plummet, the
state deficit has skyrocketed, approaching $40 billion before the September 11th
tragedy.”
Noting that Albany
leadership has failed us, Cheevers cites dropping property values in most of
the upstate area. “The vast majority of residents can’t sell their
homes for what they paid for them 10 years ago. And we are losing our most
valuable asset, our young people who are looking elsewhere to build their
future.” Cheevers goes on to say, “Ignoring the root causes of
these problems, the New York State Legislature marches on in an enforced
lockstep using chairmanships, bonuses and stipends to keep every member in line
with the leadership—no innovation, no fresh thinking.”
“New York State has
turned out to be a government by the politicians, of the politicians and for the politicians. It is a state without
true leadership and without a vision for the future.”
Cheevers cautions,
“Unless there is a genuine change in thinking, there can be nothing but
more of the same” and offers a new approach and a new start. His vision is
to Save New York and to start by Fixing Albany.
In launching the campaign,
Cheevers plans to make extensive use of the internet to post his positions, to
discuss the issues he refers to as “Albany’s Outrages” and to
help fund his campaign. Cheevers explains, “This is a non-traditional
campaign for unusual times. Consequently, I don’t have access to
traditional campaign funding. The other candidates have millions to throw at
you, so it’s coming down to message over money.”
