Less Congressmen, More Legislators
While the number of New York State's Congressional delegation directly reflects New York's dwindling population, the New York State Legislature shows an increase in the number of State Senators. By the terms of the stateconstitution, the number of state senators can expand or contract. Rather than save taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars by rightfully decreasing the number of state senators, they have actually increased the number of state senators. It is one of those Albany mysteries why there are less people and more senators.
One of the reasons could be that the senators decided to represent their own interests rather than yours. Less members means a narrower majority and less power. Or maybe the majority leader can't decide who should go. Seems like there are never any layoffs in government.
With the state budget growing at a historically alarming rate, cutting the size of government, particularly the state senate, could produce significant savings in a short period of time. It is unlikely the public would mourn the loss or even notice the difference, except in their tax bills.
