Legislators for Life
Once you get elected to the New York State Legislature, you have the job for life. It's not supposed to be that way - it's just the way it has turned out. In the 2000 election, every seat in the State Legislature (both the Senate and the Assembly) came up for re-election. Out of these 211 legislative seats, only one incumbent lost their seat. How's that for job security?
Election to the State Legislature just about guarantees re-election with plenty of election support in the form of disguised state campaign funding. That includes everything from support staffing to speechwriters to regular constituent mailings and access to radio and television news and interviews--with state-produced videos and clips. If the legislator happens to be a member of the majority party in either the Senate or the Assembly, there's much more of everything. Chances are that their seat will be safe and secure for as long as he or she wants it.
When it comes to job security, a New York State Legislator has a better chance of remaining in office than the puppet parliaments of Third World dictatorships. Because of this great "Legislator Security System", incumbent legislators have an enormous advantage in fund raising. The tools provided by the New York State Legislature for its members provide what amounts to a virtually insurmountable edge in any election. It's an amazing tax supported re-election machine.
Some legislators have access to so much campaign money that they have actually gone out and purchased new SUV vehicles and installed pool covers at their personal residence - all with campaign funds. How sweet it is!
The steady migration of people and jobs out of New York State has cost this state two more seats in the United States Congress, and with that loss a declining influence in the national arena. Nevertheless, even with a substantially decreased population base, the New York State Legislature blithely retains all of its 150 Assembly seats and actually increased the State Senate to 61 members. Despite New York's inability to retain people and jobs, the record shows your state legislator-whether they're doing a good job or a terrible job - is pretty hard to beat. You got him or her for life.
